The proposal is backed by a research completed in 2014, where a staff on the George Washington University induced unconsciousness in the 54-year-old lady struggling from intractable epilepsy by stimulating her claustrum. The lady underwent depth electrode implantation and electrical stimulation mapping. The electrode amongst the left claustrum and
